Very nice OpenNI/NITE updates available for downloading from OpenNI site.

Some key features include:

* Added the ability to load & save NITE skeleton calibration from files.
* Improved .NET Wrappers (with feedback from the community).
* Improved NITE algorithms.
* Auto-detection of sensor capabilities (such as resolution /compression / etc…) – No more hardcoded values (like X/Y res) in the XML files!
* Preliminary DirectShow interface for image & audio.
* Native 64-bit windows support.
* Proper multi-sensor support (with NiViewer integration as a sample)
* Support for ASUS WAVI/Xtion devices.
* Added a brand new Unity wrapper which is now an integral part of NITE.
* Switched Windows installer from NSIS to MSI/WIX (for proper upgrade / add & remove / UAC support etc…).
* Split installers to redist (runtime DLLs only – no includes/samples/etc…) and development versions.
* Many many many bug fixes & performance improvements!

FAAST out!

FAAST is middleware to facilitate integration of full-body control with games and VR applications using OpenNI-compliant depth sensors (currently the PrimeSensor and the Microsoft Kinect). The toolkit incorporates a custom VRPN server to stream the user’s skeleton over a network, allowing VR applications to read the skeletal joints as trackers using any VRPN client. FAAST can also emulate keyboard input triggered by body posture and specific gestures. This allows the user add custom body-based control mechanisms to existing off-the-shelf games that do not provide official support for depth sensors.

Update (17.01.2013) – This old post is obsolete now and instruction will not work with latest OpenNI 2. I will wrote new one soon, when new SensorKinect drivers will be available.

Just installed OpenNI files to my home PC and run few samples. Working pretty good. Below simple instruction how to setup OpenNI for kinect hardware on Windows (i used Windows 7 Pro 64)

1. First uninstall all previous drivers (NUI or libfreenect)
2. Then install drivers from https://github.com/avin2/SensorKinect use manual install from ‘\Platform\Win32\Driver’ ,after correct install you will have ‘Kinect Motor’ and ‘ ‘Kinect Camera’ under ‘PrimeSensor’

3. Install OpenNI and NITE

4. Run SensorKinect-Win32-5.0.0.exe from ‘\Bin’ folder in package you get on step 2.

5. put this into ‘NITE/Data/Sample-User.xml’ file

Microsoft – kinecting people!

I really love my new toy – Kinect. I love it so much, so i buy one more! For experimenting of course. ) Its just 2 weeks from it released to publuc, but so much amazing things already done with it and i’m sure more will be released very soon. Lots of talented peoples play with it and share their ideas around globe. Digital artists, programmers, demomakers etc… I’m sure kinect have a great power inside, and with our help it will be released. ) Below some videos, first steps on this long road. )
